Adhesive selection is a system decision. It must account for the panel backing, substrate chemistry and movement, indoor or outdoor exposure, temperature, moisture and the finish expected at edges and joints.

Identify the substrate
Record whether the receiving surface is mineral, board-based, metal, timber-based or an existing finish. Identify coatings, curing compounds or contamination.

Check condition and movement
Assess soundness, flatness, moisture, cracks, joints and anticipated movement. Repair or redesign unsuitable areas before choosing the bonding system.

Shortlist compatible systems
Compare the flexible stone supplier’s guidance with the adhesive manufacturer’s written compatibility and exposure limits.

Test the full assembly
Use the actual substrate preparation, primer, adhesive, panel and finishing system in a representative mock-up before approval.
What a suitable substrate looks like
A suitable substrate is structurally stable, firmly bonded, clean and prepared to the tolerances required by a thin cladding. Dust, oil, weak paint, salts, active moisture and uncontrolled cracks can compromise adhesion or telegraph through the finish.
Why there is no universal adhesive
Products sold as flexible stone or MCM can use different compositions and backings. Adhesive recommendations must therefore be tied to the exact supplied product and tested assembly rather than to the category name alone.
Frequently asked questions
Can tile adhesive be used?
Only when the panel supplier and adhesive manufacturer confirm compatibility for the exact substrate and exposure. The product category alone is not enough to approve it.
Is primer always required?
Not always. Primer requirements depend on substrate porosity, condition and the selected adhesive system. Follow the written system specification.
